Basis for Recognition

About The Expert Research Awards

Recognizing Research That Can Make a Difference

The Expert Research Awards recognize credible research with the potential to advance scientific understanding, clinical practice, patient care, or healthcare decision-making.

Recognition is based not simply on whether a study reports an interesting or statistically significant result. It considers both the strength of the evidence supporting the study's conclusions and the potential contribution of those conclusions within the field being evaluated.

Research may contribute in different ways. Some studies provide compelling evidence that could change clinical practice. Others introduce new ideas, strengthen existing knowledge, address questions with broad relevance, or identify findings that warrant further investigation. The Expert Research Awards are designed to recognize these different forms of meaningful contribution.

Credibility Comes First

An exciting finding is only as meaningful as the evidence behind it. Before considering what a study might contribute to its field, we first consider how much confidence can be placed in its findings. We refer to this as trustworthiness.

Trustworthiness looks at how a study was designed and carried out, whether the analysis supports the conclusions, and whether bias or other limitations may have affected the results.

No study is perfect, but having limitations doesn't prevent research from being recognized. What matters is whether those limitations are serious enough to weaken confidence in what the study found.

For the Expert Research Awards, trustworthiness provides the foundation for recognition. Before a paper is ever considered for recognition, it must first rely on sufficiently credible evidence.
